Hayes Joins Faculty at Morehouse College

Dr. Worth Kamili Hayes joins the faculty of Morehouse College beginning the Fall 2023 semester as the Avalon Professor in Humanities and Social Sciences, and Associate Professor of History and Africana Studies.


Prior to joining Morehouse, Hayes served as Associate Professor of History and Director of Academic and Learning Outcomes at Tuskegee University. His departure precedes a decade of working at Tuskegee University. Hayes received his B.A. in History from Xavier University of Louisiana and earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in History from Emory University.


A written statement from, Dr. Albert E. Russell, Assistant Provost for Academic Programs and Student Matters said, “This is a huge loss for us. Thanks (Dr. Hayes) for your dedication to Tuskegee and to our students. Your work with institutional Effectiveness and Learning Outcomes has been transformative! Godspeed in your new endeavor.”


Hayes is the author of the award-winning publication Schools of Our Own: Black Chicago’s Golden Age of Private Education. The book was published in 2020 by Northwestern University Press. His work on African American education, urbanization, and post-World War II activism has been published in the American Educational History Journal, U.S. Catholic Historian, and several edited volumes.


Hayes also served as the head coach of Tuskegee’s quiz bowl team since 2015. This past April, he was recognized as the Coach of the Year by the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge.

Dr. Channapatna S. Prakash, Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at Tuskegee, said, “We thank you (Dr. Hayes) for your service to Mother Tuskegee. We sure appreciate the tremendous contributions you have made through your teaching, scholarly work, and also for your leadership in the Honda Challenge in preparing our students for that event; plus, your role in the Office of Institutional Evaluation and Effectiveness.”


Dr. Hayes is the recipient of the Tuskegee University Mwalimu Teaching Award, the Andrew W. Mellon UNCF Faculty Residency Fellowship, an NEH Humanities Initiatives at HBCUs grant, and the Timuel D. Black Jr. Fellowship in African American Studies.
